CF-UVZ

CF-UVZ – MJ5 Sirocco (Fox)

CF-UVZ was built by GT Kean and first flew in 1967. Fox is likely the 5th MJ5 to take the air.

The MJ5-Sirocco was designed by the famed French aircraft designer Marcel Jurca. The MJ5 was named after the hot dry dusty South European wind that blows up from Africa in the spring time. I understand the MJ5 was designed for a French airforce competition as a trainer.

Terry McEveoy saved CF-UVZ from being destroyed in 2004. At that point the plane had over 2,200 hours and had travelled widely through North & South America. The plane was showing its age and was beyond the resources of the current owner to refit. Terry tore it down to the frame and after repairing a couple of minor parts he reskinned her (the paint is Schoolbus Yellow). This effort consumed most of 2005 – 2006.

Terry sold CF-UVZ in the summer of 2008 after rebasing her from Delta Air Park (CAK3) to Olds-Didsbury (CEA3). I rebased her to Springbank (CYBW).

After ground-looping her I upgraded the engine to 160 HP and got a new funky propeller.

After a spectacularly failed take-off I transferred Fox to someone who could rebuild her

Technical Specifications

  • Engine – Lycomb 0–320 (0–320-B1A) 160 HP
  • Propeller – Prince P-Tip 69″

  • Wing Span – 21.5’
  • Cruise – with the old Walker-Colins and 150 HP 0–320-A1A 140–150 mph indicated
    • indicated ~150 mph with the 160 HP B1A
    • indicated ~135 mph blasting around the Rockies above 10,000
  • Ceiling – with the old Walker-Colins & Lycomb O–320A1A with 2 aboard we were climbing at 500 fpm at 11,500 when we saw the mountain we wanted to. Since the new propeller flights in the Rockies have seen climbs >1,000 fpm. I plan on 750 fpm in the 9–11,000 foot range. Still learning best climb.
  • Range – the capacity of the passenger to stay in the plane. The back seat aspires to the comfort of the bak-seat on a Porshe.
  • 115 L of fuel provide a theoretical 3 1/2 hour range (plus a 30 minute reserve). Prior to Terry’s rebuild the passenger area had an temporary fuel tank and the log shows some long flights. Since the rebuild, 2 hours is the working passenger limit
  • To be a passenger you have to be small, flexible & motivated.
